Larry Hoover, also known as "King Larry," is a former gang leader and founder of the Chicago street gang, Gangster Disciples. He was born on November 30, 1950, in Jackson, Mississippi, and grew up in the impoverished Cabrini Green housing project on the north side of Chicago.
Hoover rose through the ranks of the Gangster Disciples in the 1970s and became the gang's top leader in the 1980s. He was known for his business acumen and his ability to unify rival gangs under the Gangster Disciples umbrella.
Hoover was also known for his criminal activities, including drug trafficking and murder. He was convicted in 1997 of running a criminal enterprise from prison and was given six life sentences.
Since his imprisonment, Hoover has become a controversial figure among those who believe he was unfairly targeted by law enforcement and those who view him as a symbol of gang culture and violence. He has maintained his innocence and has called for an end to gang violence in Chicago and elsewhere.
